Episode 94: Food, Friends and Fresh Meat — The Scope at CONvergence

The Scope was in attendance at CONvergence 2010, and once again we took the path of least resistance to acquire content by asking people to call the voicemail line and tell us their convention stories. In fact, we didn’t even bother to print posters with the number this year — how’s that for apathy? — we just told our friends to call in, and with a few exceptions, those friends turned out to be Intrepid Scope Reporter G.

So sit back and enjoy this assemblage of random moments from the convention. Jared talks about his consuite food victories, Shane conducts a couple inebriated interviews, and ISRG fills you in on the everything else.

Episode 93: The Afterglow with Rants & Raves, Verbal Punctuation, and Valification

This episode of The Scope is kind of like the moments immediately after a tremendous night of passion. It’s all good, but not as good as the time right before you are lying in bed, spent. (Or that’s what we imagine it would be like…since we’re nerds and obviously not all that well-versed in the world of night passion.)

See, we’re coming off of two excellent episodes of your favorite podcast. We’re talking about shows great guests, fun games, and mucho effort. So with #93, it was time to reload, relax, and get back to basics. That means A LOT of talking. And since we’re clearly experts in the world of deep-sea oil drilling and ocean currents, we focused our time on the tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico.

To balance out the seriousness of it all, we also rap about a couple of summer movies and we start to help Adam pick a wedding date. He really should get a tux with ruffles, right? And with all, you’d expect the show to be brief. If you think that, you clearly haven’t been listening all that long. Shame on you.

The Scope episode 93 doesn’t pity the fool, but it does fool the pity. Quit your jibba jabba.

Episode 92: Let’s Talk About Crap, Baby (and Then Some Stuff Happened)

What do you get when you take the already long-winded, critically-acclaimed podcast known as “The Scope” and mix it with Ron Gerber, host of the greatest pop music radio program in the country, “Crap From The Past?”

Answer: the longest and most important Scope episode ever. EVER. (What’s hyperbole, anyway?)

Seriously, your Scope hosts pulled out all the stops on this one. Tons of prep work, tons of sound clips and effects, and tons of overall effort.

And then Adam did the news.

Still, Ron was cool enough to stick through the entire 2 1/2+ hours of blabbering. That means, for you, the loyal Scope listener, tons of radio insider goodness, more talk about top 40 radio hits than you can shake a stick at, and even a great story connecting Ron to a notable late-night talk show host. (No, we’re not talking about that big-jawed Jay Leno, thank God.) And did we mention a brief return of “Hit The Post?” If you make it to hour ten of episode #92, you can experience it.

Finally, we try, with varying degrees of success, to put the whole Human Centipede business behind us. Pun intended.

The Scope episode 92 knows that “Boogiemonster” is the only acceptable moniker for Ron Gerber.

Episode 91: Wicked Awesome Rockstars, Sack-Tapping, and the Longest Running TV Show, “Banzai.”

In a very special episode of The Scope, the East-Coast boy band Lesser Knowns Skype up and spend some time with your three most favorite internet personalities ever. (No, we’re not talking about Ricky Gervais, Tay Zonday, and the stealth cat that stalks the camera set to the “Jaws” theme.) Listen in as LK (that’s what the cool kids call them) talk about the rocking & rolling, scallops, and youthful ass-kickatudeness(TM). You’ll also bear witness to the return of The Nerd Degree. That in itself is worth like $1.72 and a bus transfer.

Because we care, we also came through with some great news, a controversial review of LCD Soundsystem’s latest, and more “Lost” talk. Because, really, who can’t get enough of that?

The Scope episode 91 would never dream of sewing your face to another person’s bum.

Episode 90: Adam Adam And Cult Jam, The Smoke Monster, And Some Nasty Super Crabs

Nothing says “The Scope” like a good case of genital lice. In honor of that fact, your favorite podcasting hosts take a nit comb to the television program that is “Lost.” That’s right. “Lost” is ending and The Scope had to do what no other media outlet had done: give a full retrospective on the second best show Matthew Fox has ever done. (The first being “Party of Five.” Sorry we had to spell out the joke. But with our listeners, you just can’t assume anything.)

No, it ain’t original. But it did give us the opportunity to utilize one of the best soundboards ever created by man.

If total “Lost” coverage wasn’t enough, we also brought back a proper Scope music review. With sound clips and everything!!! Next thing you know, we’ll actually start doing prep work for the show. Hey, anything can happen.

The Scope episode 90 is fully backing the Nano Play concept.

Episode 89: Trippin’ Balls Rolls Off The Tongue

Everybody knows summer just ain’t summer without The Scope taking a seriously critical look at all of the movie releases of the season. So, just like we’ve done every year, we do a lot of big talkin’ about a lot of movies we probably won’t get around to seeing.

(Of course, that new Julia Robert’s movie, Eat, Pray, Love will definitely be seen multiple times by all three Scope hosts. Absolutely no worries there.)

And just to make the 2010 Scope Summer Movie Preview just a little more official, we invited occasional Scope contributor, Scooter, to stop by and give his subtle but intoxicating opinion. He also was cool enough to recently take a CROSS-COUNTRY ROAD TRIP to the Coachella music festival. You’ll find out how much drugs he took (none), how many wet t-shirt contests he judged (zip), and how many male ding-a-lings he saw (too many to count).

Finally, please pay close attention as poor Shane loses energy and is called out numerous times on his comedic skill level by the rest of the panel. It’s both sad and infuriating, all at the same time.

The Scope Episode 89, unlike MGMT, will always play their biggest hit at each and every one of their concerts.

The Scope Returns to Zero Hour

Once again, Jared and Shane have seen fit to leave their stain on an episode of Zero Hour with John Norton. Hour 25 covers Ocarina of Rhyme, American Idol, The Coco and Lefty Show, Headlines, and TV Shows That Need To End. We also play a game called “Yahoo! Schmanswers”.

Episode 88: Even the Celestial Steed wonders when iAdam will propose

While your Scope hosts were busy sizing up their Depends undergarments and guzzling gallons of Ensure Vitamin drink, the “tweens” of the US of A went out and took over the pop culture landscape. We were out of touch, too busy watching “Murder She Wrote” reruns and listening to our Tiffany cassette tape to care.

But now, the Ignorance. Stops. Here.

Episode 88 brings a brand new bit, “What The Kids Are Into,” in which your Scope hosts dive into the latest teen trends. Yes, you’ll find out if the romantic vampire movement has “teeth,” and if Jared is now a Biebermaniac. It’s sure to make you feel thirteen all over again — even if that’s not a good thing.

We also take on the first legit comic movie of the year, Kick-Ass. And you know what that means: your Scope hosts do the entire show in green and yellow scuba suits, all the while pummeling each other with night sticks. Too bad we’re not filming this sucker…(foreshadowing?)

The Scope episode 88 thinks we’re alone now. There doesn’t seem to be anyone around.

Episode 87: Doin’ the Reverse Cowboy (aka The First Ever Scope Madness!)

After years of laziness, Scope music correspondent Al decided, on his own, to coordinate another “Scope Event.” Of course, you all know we’re talking about the inaugural edition of Scope Madness, the music geek version of some sort of post-secondary basketball tourney. We think.

Episode 87 features the final four (can we even use that phrase without the NCAA coming to sue our collective asses?) songs and spirited debate on the pros and cons of each tune. Yes, The Beatles may have come up in the conversation. Yes, Adam hated on them. Yes, Adam secretly wanted to replace The Beatles Madness song with his favorite song of all time, “Rico Suave” (expertly rapped by Gerardo.) Or was it “Informer” by Snow? It really doesn’t matter, does it?

And guess what? It’s the four year anniversary of The Scope. So the timing of the competition couldn’t be better.

Oh, yes it could. Because the aforementioned Al sat in on the show to help things out. And the gang got to talk about the sexy frosted tips of Guy Fieri.

So, it was a perfect show. Happy Anniversary, Scope!

The Scope episode #87 believes there isn’t a sexual position called “The Kings of Leon.” But maybe there should be.
