And I loved V, it stayed true to the source material as much as it could. As did the Spidey movies. My argument is that spidey comics being in the “super-hero” genre have a certain way of bringing momentum into a story. With all of the banks in NYC, it would be pretty rare that a super-hero would be swinging by a specific bank while it was getting robbed by a super-villain, yet in comics it happens all the time.

I think the problem you run into with Spidey and other superhero movies is that you are trying to develop a story with a beginning, middle, and end out of a serialized comic. V and Watchmen were both limited series with full arcs. Episodic comics have to rely on that tease to keep readers coming back. For 30 plus years. So when you adapt that character into a different format, you have to make certain concessions. The more you make me think about, the more I feel I have to like Spider-man and the things it does accomplish. The reason V worked, along with Sin City, Batman Begins, Ghostworld, and quite a few other comic movies was that they stayed true to the themes and thoughts from the source material. Does Spider-man do that? Yes. Do they try to shoe-horn Venom in? Yes, and there’s a ton of arguments about why that shouldn’t have happened and why it did, but woulda, coulda, shoulda, is not a good argument, and you have to critique what’s up no the screen. I enjoyed the two and a half hours I sat watching the movie. Will I purchase it when it comes out? Yes. Are there better movies out there? yeah. So, how do I grade this movie? Base it on the other spider-man movies(which it is very similar to), base it on other super-hero movies(which it is by far better than the recent slate, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, Elektra(even though I find that a guilty pleasure), Batman and Robin, Superman Returns)? Or base it on the movie itself? I was entertained.

And Even Ex Machina has an end in sight. It would make a good mini-series on HBO. Maybe after they do Preacher.

Spider-Man is Marvel’s premiere super hero. Marvel and Sony need to make the movies better than 2.5 stars. Better than “not great, not bad”.

And the “comic books are comic books” excuse just isn’t acceptable anymore. I don’t care what low standards others hold them to. There are enough examples of “literary comic books” out there (V, Ex Machina, The Watchmen) to show that it can be done.

I think it’s great that there’s a Beatles parody in your show. Gosh, those Beatles really are everywhere. I guess they’re not overrated, if everyone knows them and uses them.
Wow. I didn’t think Spidey3 was that bad. Read the Spidey comics from the 60′s. It’s a pretty good homage to them. Peter going evil, but even then he can’t get it quite right. He’s still a geek, no matter what he does. And the symbiote finding Peter first, and Venom running into Sandman. Stuff like that happens in comics all the time. Have you read a comic book recently? Adam? It’s like saying you order bacon at a restaurant and then complain about it even though you don’t eat pork. I’d give it 2 1/2 stars. Same as the other two. It’s not great, not bad, left me with the same feeling as the first two.

Literally. Literally.
