He just wasn't that good. Sure he had oodles of athletic ability, but didn't have the game intelligence or leadership that a QB needs. Brad Johnson wasn't my saviour either, but pair Dante's abilities with Brad Johnson's game intelligence and you'd have a heck of a QB...but still no leadership abilities.

It wasn’t Dante’s skin color that made him dumber than a box of rocks and a poor leader. It is going to be the downfall of the Wolves as he is pretty much the only good thing on the team. I have been a die hard fan sinse the team started and I don't care to go back to the days being the complete and utter laughing stock of the league.Yeah there is a bad talent around him but the man can't carry the team to the playoffs by himself, he needs aleast a few good players around him like Shaq (despite as much as I loath him) has players like Dwayne Wade around him, etc. If I wasn't at work I would write more but for now I will leave it at that for now.

Al~

Not a sad day when KG gets traded? However, you cannot give all of Daunte's credit to his center. That is a bit naive. Matt Birk is my favorite Vikings player and I won't even give the man that much credit in Daunte's success. That would be like saying Jeff Saturday is the reason Peyton Manning is so good or Dwight Stevenson to Dan Marino. As for the race issue, people didn't dislike Culpepper because he was black. However, I think he got a shorter leash. People never had to turn on Kirby or KG because they've never played as bad as DC did. Without starting a whole page rant, I'll keep it simple by saying that Kevin Garnett has not gotten better every year and it will not be as sad of a day around hear if they traded him. A real superstar doesn't miss the playoffs 3 years in a row (know matter how bad the talent around him is).

G Love, I you always have great material for debate. isPermaLink="false">http://www.thescopeshow.com/blog/archives/85#comment-1586

Daunte, Daunte, Daunte.2004. Who was center? Birk? Protecting the line, protecting the QB, giving him more time to try and do thing? Oh. It was Birk. Birk has to sit out a season, what happens to Daunte? Oh he stinks. He can't find anyone to pass to so he runs the ball. If there's a heart and soul of the Vikings it's Matt Birk. And having Birk out for a season showed where Daunte was really lacking as a "head game" quarterback.
Now am I pinning all the woe's of the Vikes on Culpepper? No. But he doesn't have the head game to be a great quarterback. And that's not because of the color of his skin. It's just watching the man play.
KG on the Wolves. Now he's a good player, but he can't do it on his own, and needs some support and some stronger teammates. I have a feeling we're going to lose him, and that will be a sad day. He's come so far, and improved year after year.
I think it is incredibly harsh to say that Minnesotans didn't like Daunte because he was black. That has nothing to do with it. If we didn't like black people then we wouldn't have given Kriby Puckett as much credit as we did, and still do. Now are there some people out there who didn't like Culpepper because of the color of his skin? I'm sure there are(I'd be naive not to realize that), but just because you don't like a player, that doesn't make you racist, or even color-centric. If you take that ultra-liberal tack, then we won't be able to criticize anyone, and do we(or you) really want to go there? And yes, Peyton is a good QB. And he can be pretty funny as this seasons SNL showed. (not as good as when Joe Montana was on, but still funny).p.s. we could always talk about Denny if you want to discuss racism/football/and Minnesota.

Daunte, Daunte, Daunte.

2004. isPermaLink="false">http://www.thescopeshow.com/blog/archives/85#comment-1574

I better chime in since there is a sports topic. I believe Dante got unneccesary flak on many occasions. Did he receive an extra heaping or two because of his skin color? I will say possibly (my head is moving up and down while I'm typing this however). I personally don't like Dante because I don't think was ever capable of manning (know pun intended) up to anything. To this day, I believe he used his lack of fondness for Coach Childress to cover of the real reason why he didn't want to come back: he couldn't face the media and the fans after the whole love boat scandal. The one big difference between Randy Moss and Dante Culpepper was that Moss made no apologies for his actions and could except the fact that people weren't going to like him. Culpepper loved being the "good guy" and "team leader" for the Vikings. When he got caught in the love boat scandal, his image was tarnished. Unfortunately for Dante, he plays in a city that won't back up their black quarterback. He spent all the time watching film try to get people to believe he was not just an "athletic" quarterback, but also a "cerebral" quarterback, yet after his escapades idiot, fans were only going to lump him with all the rest of the "stupid athletes" who think they are above the law (see Michael Vick a.k.a. Ron Mexico). However, these same fans will back Brad Johnson no matter how many times he'll throw the 3 yard pass when we need 12 for the first down.Good show this week. Since Shane likes giving me a ribbing on how difficult it was for me to give the scope score, I will give a small critique: Shane, you do not have to call every band's first mainstream album "their first album". Jimmy Eat World had several albums before "The Middle" hit the airwaves. (I'm guessing that) you also insinuated that Travis had a "fantastic debut album" with their second album "The Man Who". Their first album was "Good Feeling" which was only big in the U.K. while "The Man Who" which blew up in the U.K. and made a small dent in the U.S. alternative radio world was actually their second album. I felt bad about writing this at first, but I know how much Shane likes to be right and make other people feel wrong. Shane, I just want to make you a better host and that his my only motivation for telling you that. I suppose a simple phone call would've been suffice, but I thought everyone could join in the fun.

I better chime in since there is a sports topic. He couldn't see open players to pass them the ball, and whenever he got rushed he'd panic and run the ball. (It was actually sad because I wish he had a head game like Brett Favooray).
